Leather Care Guide
How to care for your bag – for years of beauty and character
A leather bag isn’t just an accessory — it’s an evolving piece that ages with you. At YOMA Studio, we craft most of our pieces using high-quality, natural leather that develops character over time. With the right care, your bag will stay beautiful for many years to come.
General Care for All Leather Types
-
Store thoughtfully
Always store your bag in its dust bag when not in use. Avoid hanging it by the straps for long periods — this may stretch the leather. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or humidity. -
Avoid contact with water and oils
Leather is sensitive to moisture and oils. If your bag gets wet, pat it dry gently with a soft cloth and allow it to air dry naturally — do not use heat. -
Rotate use
If you own more than one bag, give each a break. Rotating usage helps prevent over-wear and stress on the leather. -
Spot clean gently
Use a clean, dry or slightly damp cloth to wipe off dust and surface dirt. Avoid harsh cleaners or alcohol-based products unless they are specifically made for leather.
Care by Leather Type
1. Full-Grain Leather
Our most premium leather — untreated, richly textured, and built to last a lifetime.
-
Clean with a soft dry cloth.
-
Apply leather conditioner every 3–6 months to keep it supple.
-
Avoid scratching with sharp objects — full-grain leather shows wear, but beautifully.
Tip: Let it age. The natural patina that forms over time is part of its charm.
2. Smooth Leather (Top-Grain or Finished Leather)
Elegant, refined, with a slight sheen and smooth feel.
-
Wipe regularly with a soft cloth.
-
Use leather cream or balm designed for finished leathers.
-
Keep away from colored fabrics that may transfer dye.
Tip: If scuffed, gently rub the area with your fingers — your skin's natural oils may help blend it in.
3. Vegetable-Tanned Leather
A natural tanning process gives this leather a firm feel and beautiful aging potential.
-
Keep it dry — this leather is more absorbent.
-
Avoid water, oils, and lotions.
-
Over time, it will darken and soften naturally.
Tip: Use a neutral cream polish to preserve the finish.
4. Calfskin Leather
Soft, lightweight, and luxuriously smooth — ideal for delicate designs.
-
Store carefully to avoid dents or creases.
-
Clean with a microfiber cloth.
-
Avoid abrasive surfaces.
Tip: Stuff the bag with tissue paper to maintain its shape.
5. Suede or Nubuck (Textured Finish)
Soft to the touch, matte and velvety, but requires more attention.
-
Use a suede brush regularly to remove dust and restore texture.
-
Protect with a suede-specific waterproof spray.
-
Avoid water, oils, and dark denim (color transfer!).
Tip: For minor stains, use a suede eraser or a white pencil eraser.
Additional Tips
-
Never store in plastic bags — leather needs to breathe.
-
Don’t overload your bag — excess weight may stretch or deform the leather.
-
Avoid strong perfume, alcohol-based products, or antibacterial gels near your bag.
